It tends to include death’s shadow, ragavan, DRC, ledger shredder, and a mix of burn, counterspells, removal and hand disruption. Note: If you do eventually go with grixis down the road, it’s the most variable. I haven’t seen anyone play this variant in quite some time. Jund Shadow is less popular but it’s basically Grixis shadow with blue swapped with green for Tarmogoyf and it is more likely to run green pump spells and temur battlerage. The nice thing about this version with Varolz is that you can have a 13/13 without killing yourself to put it into play. For 3 color Grixis is probably your best bet but I’ve been playing against an Abzan variant a lot lately running Tarmogoyf, Varolz the Scar-Striped, and Prismatic Ending. I’ve also seen orzhov shadow scamblade, but that one isn’t nearly as popular. Unlike Grixis Shadow or Dimir Shadow you lose out on a lot of the tempo/control aspects and you go hard into “killing yourself enough to kill your opponent faster” so it could be a little dangerous against burn, but for some matchups that extra aggressive pressure and speed may be all it takes to push you over the finish line.Īs for upgrades I’d maybe go to a 2 color shadow deck first with Dimir playing more like a Murktide Regent deck that just has shadow in it, Rakdos can either be a more aggressive less budget version with terminate, Kroxa, temur battle rage, ragavan, and maybe fury and bloodmoon. I haven’t tried the budget 12 shadow deck (I went straight to a $900-$1000 Grixis version) but I don’t see why it wouldn’t be worth giving a shot. Most people at my FNM play something like T2 decks or lower)

What do you think about this budget (100$) list? Does this look like a viable/good budget deck? (for FNM really, not playing pro with this. This Deathshadow deck looks like it can be upgraded in the future in to something like Rakdos or even Grixis?

I also saw the recent Mono-White tokens deck featured on MTGgoldfish but was told that the deck doesn't really have any upgrade path so it's a bad investment.

I found this 12 Shadow budget decklist featured on an article from MTGgoldfish and it looks really fun. I know everyone is gonna tell me to play something mono-red like Burn, Prowess or 8-Whack but i personally don't really enjoy playing those kinds of deck and was hoping there maybe were some other also viable budget options in modern? So i've been looking to get in to modern recently since it's one of the most played formats at my LGS, but i'm on a tight budget (around 100$, wow is modern expensive haha).
